Beaches and Mountains of Koh Kong (3 days)
Koh Kong Island is the largest in Cambodia. The west coast is flanked by beautiful white sand beaches, and the island is becoming an increasingly popular gateway to Cambodia for overland travelers. It is also emerging as a new centre for ecotourism, with several protected areas and community tourism projects now established in the area. Waterfalls, mangroves, wooded groves, and diverse bird and marine life are all easily seen here. DESTINATIONS • Koh Kong island, the largest in Cambodia, a pristine heaven for nature lovers HIGHLIGHTS • Visit waterfalls and take a dip in swimming holes
ITINERARY [Day 1] Phnom Penh – Koh Kong We leave Phnom Penh and travel south on National Highway 4 towards the south coast. As we leave behind the suburbs of Phnom Penh, the scenery gets more interesting. We pause to pay our respects to Yeay Peau, a protective spirit who looks after travellers on the road. The Pich Nil Pass is where the road cuts through Bokor and Kirirom National Parks to the east and west and is lined with shrines and incense. We swing west on new National Highway 48 towards Koh Kong province, passing through the small port of Sre Ambel. The road soon passes through some beautiful stretches of Cambodian jungle, offering some expansive views over the Cardamom Mountains. We stop for a local lunch along the way before we reach the bridge at the village of Ta Tai. Here we can hire a local boat to pay a visit to the pretty waterfall of Ta Tai. The large boulders here ensure there are many swimming holes. Or we can carry onto our secluded and unique floating accommodation at the 4 Rivers Floating Eco-Lodge, which has received rave, reviews in the international press since it opened over a year ago. Here you can relax or use the 4 Rivers kayaks if you have energy to spare. [Day 2] Koh Kong Island Excursion We leave 4 Rivers after breakfast and cruise through the nearby mangroves as we head towards a fishing village to find out about the local way of life. The village also has a Cham Muslim quarter which we also visit. After a picnic lunch, we return to 4 Rivers through the mangrove forest. Alternatively, we can take a speedboat and head out into the open sea and travel to the deserted tropical Koh Kong Island, Cambodia's largest island at 20kms in length, which has seven pristine white sandy beaches, on its west coast. It is forbidden to explore its thickly forested interior so the beaches, lined with coconut palms and lush vegetation, and its shallow clear waters, are the reason you come to the island. We enjoy a fresh seafood barbecue for lunch and after more time to relax on the sand, we head back to 4 Rivers. [Day 3] Koh Kong – Phnom Penh We enjoy a last look at the beautiful surrounding of 4 Rivers after breakfast we travel east on National Highway 48 towards Sre Ambel, before joining national Highway 4 and return to the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh, the lively riverside capital of the country, check into our hotel and use our remaining time to look at life along the riverfront. Or we continue south to Sihanoukville by road and extend our beach vacation there, home to some of Cambodia's best beaches.
