Phnom Penh is a graceful capital that was once known as the 'Pearl of Asia'. It is a timeless throwback to an older Asia. The riverfront area remains one of the most attractive in the region and is perfect for a late afternoon stroll. The tinkle of music from ancient temples, saffron-clad monks wandering past, and street hawkers with bubbling cauldrons immerse us in the past, even as rapid, modern changes spring up all around.

DESTINATIONS

• Treasures of Phnom Penh: Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda, National Museum, Tuol Sleng Museum, The Killing Fields of Choeung Ek

ITINERARY

[Day 1] Full day tour in Phnom Penh
Meals: N/A | Accommodation: N/A

In the morning, we explore the stunning Royal Palace complex, home to the Cambodian royal family and a famed symbol of the nation. We continue to the Silver Pagoda, named after the 5000 silver tiles covering the floor, where there is also a delicate emerald Buddha made of baccarat crystal, which gives the temple its Khmer name of Wat Preah Keo (Temple of the Emerald Buddha).

We leave the Royal Palace and continue to the nearby National Museum, home to the world's finest collection of sculpture from the glories of the Angkor period. Learn more about the evolution of the history and art of one of the world's greatest ancient empires.

In the afternoon, we come face to face with the horrific crimes of the Khmer Rouge. Tuol Sleng was a former high school that the Khmer Rouge turned into a centre for interrogation, torture and death. Today it is a sobering museum and serves to remind visitors of the terrible atrocities that occurred in Cambodia. We then travel out of town to the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek. Many prisoners from Tuol Sleng followed this same route to their final fate. The remains of 8985 people were exhumed from mass graves and are now respectfully enshrined in a memorial stupa.
