Koh Kong Island is the largest in Cambodia. The west coast is flanked by beautiful white sand beaches, and the island is becoming an increasingly popular gateway to Cambodia for overland travelers. It is also emerging as a new centre for ecotourism, with several protected areas and community tourism projects now established in the area. Waterfalls, mangroves, wooded groves, and diverse bird and marine life are all easily seen here. DESTINATIONS • Koh Kong island, the largest in Cambodia, a pristine heaven for nature lovers HIGHLIGHTS • Visit waterfalls and take a dip in swimming holes
ITINERARY [Day 1] Phnom Penh – Koh Kong We leave Phnom Penh and travel south on National Highway 4 towards the south coast. As we leave behind the suburbs of Phnom Penh, the scenery gets more interesting. We pause to pay our respects to Yeay Peau, a protective spirit who looks after travellers on the road. The Pich Nil Pass is where the road cuts through Bokor and Kirirom National Parks to the east and west and is lined with shrines and incense. We swing west on new National Highway 48 towards Koh Kong, passing through the small port of Sre Ambel. The road soon passes through some beautiful stretches of Cambodian jungle, offering some expansive views over the Cardamom Mountains. We stop for a local lunch along the way before we reach the bridge at the village of Ta Tai. We can carry onto our secluded and unique floating accommodation at the 4 River Floating Eco-lodge. [Day 2] Ta Tai Waterfall Excursion Your day, depending on the tide, starts at around 10am for the 45-minute boat ride past Tatai village to the falls. [Day 3] Fishing Village and Mangroves Leaving 4 Rivers around 10am, depending on the tide, you will cruise deep into the mangroves to experience a rare glimpse of life among the fishing communities that live off the natural bounty of this watery paradise. Drinks will be served en route as you glide down the waterway to your fishing village destination where you will spend time with these shy but friendly people. While the men tend their boats, the womenfolk patiently mend their nets and children play tag and football in the narrow alleyways between the stilt houses. After lunch you can make a short but comfortable climb to get an excellent panoramic view of the surrounding countryside and the ocean. Back in the boat, you will experience the pure magic of life among the mangroves and its wildlife from our boat and the kayaks. [Day 4] Koh Kong – Phnom Penh We take a last look at Koh Kong and after breakfast we travel east on new National Highway 48 towards Sre Ambel, passing through some beautiful stretches of Cambodian jungle, offering some expansive views over the Cardamom Mountains. We continue our journey as we travel north on National Highway 4 towards the Cambodian capital. We cross the Pich Nil Pass is where the road cuts through Bokor and Kirirom National Parks to the east and west and is lined with shrines. We continue to Phnom Penh, the lively riverside capital of the country, check into our hotel and use our remaining time to look at life along the riverfront. Or we continue south to Sihanoukville by road and extend our beach vacation there, home to some of Cambodia's best beaches.
