Unique Experiences in Phnom Penh (1/2 day)

Phnom Penh is a graceful capital that was once known as the 'Pearl of Asia'. It is a timeless throwback to an older Asia. The riverfront area remains one of the most attractive in the region and is perfect for a late afternoon stroll. The tinkle of music from ancient temples, saffron-clad monks wandering past, and street hawkers with bubbling cauldrons immerse us in the past, even as rapid, modern changes spring up all around. DESTINATIONS • Phnom Penh – 'Pearl of Asia' and Takhmau - home of the Khmer Arts Ensemble HIGHLIGHTS • Admire the Khmer live traditional classic dance or once in a lifetime opportunity meeting Cambodia's Arts Masters
ITINERARY [Option 1] Phnom Penh - Khmer Classical Dance Visit We take a short trip outside the city to Takhmau and the atmospheric home of the Khmer Arts Ensemble, an NGO determined to keep alive the traditional classical dance repertoire as well as producing innovative new dances under the leadership of Sophiline Cheam Shapiro. We get a rare opportunity to watch the full dance company at practice as they rehearse one of their trademark dances or a new piece of work and to find out more about the work of Khmer Arts, who are not only a professional touring troupe of more than 30 performers and artists but are also involved in outreach, research, film production and archiving to ensure the survival of this cultural icon. A full translation service will be provided. [Option 2] Cambodia's Arts Masters The glorious arts and culture of Cambodia is making a determined comeback after its virtual annihilation by the Khmer Rouge. And two of its iconic arts masters, Em Theay (classical ballet dancer and teacher) and Mann Kosal (shadow puppet master) have been at the forefront of this revitalization of the arts. Handspan is giving you the opportunity to meet these arts masters in person, find out more about their special talents and to hear first-hand of the lengths they have gone through to breathe new life into what had become dying art forms. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity that we believe will give you a unique window into the country's cultural heritage. We will take you to the home or workplace of the masters, provide a full translation service whilst you are with them and ensure you get the most from the experience. Note: N/A PRICE PER PERSON (Valid from 01/01/2013 to 31/12/2013)
Included • Drinking water during sightseeing Not included • International flight tickets and airport tax, currently $25 per person
