DESTINATIONS • Hanoi, Vietnam's vibrant 1000-year-old capital and one of Asia's loveliest cities HIGHLIGHTS • Biking from the North to South in Handspan style
ITINERARY [Day 1] Hanoi Arrival You'll be greeted at the Noi Bai airport and transferred to your hotel at the city centre. Time will be free for your refreshment. Overnight in Hanoi [Day 2] Hanoi – Moc Chau 7.00: Departure from the Handspan head office. We head west, and arrive for lunch in a beautiful valley filled with rice paddies and surrounded by limestone mountains of the Thai and Muong minority peoples. After lunch we enter the Moc Chau plateau and stop at Hua Tat. From there we start a beautiful and leisurely mountainside ride along the old colonial road 6. It is a 25-kilometer ride to Moc Chau town, and the journey is at your own pace, usually taking about 3 hours. We arrive in a large and beautiful Thai village lying at the bottom of a limestone mountain. Time for a shower and some rest before dinner. Overnight in the stilt house of our gracious hosts. [Day 3] Moc Chau Biking After breakfast, we discover the secrets of making the excellent local Oolong tea. We then take a ride on a quiet road, up and down along plum orchards, trading 'hellos' with locals along the way. We stop after a few kilometers to walk down to a beautiful valley inhabited by H'mong people. Your awesome guide will set up a picnic lunch here before we get back on our bikes. We keep riding for few kilometers more before veering left on one of the most beautiful roads of the area. The ride ends at our homestay where we can shower and rest before dinner and a good night's sleep. [Day 4] Moc Chau - Hanoi In the morning, we take a walk through the village bordered by rice and tea fields. If time allows, we may also walk to the tea factory of our host on the edge of the village to learn about the processing of the precious leaves. We then leave the area and start on our way back to Hanoi with a stop for lunch at a local restaurant between Moc Chau and Mai Chau. We typically arrive back in Hanoi around 5.30pm. [Day 5] Hanoi – Halong Bay 8.00 am - Depart from our Sales office (78 Ma May) for a 3.5 hour drive to Halong City through the Red River Delta. Transfer to a traditional wooden junk, for lunch with fresh seafood (vegetarians catered for) while you embark on a 4-hour cruise into the bay to see the incredible karst formations. The cruise into the grand Bai Tu Long Bay through the limestone cliffs rising up from the emerald water gives endless photo opportunities. Our junk will reach a floating village and offers you a closer look at local life. We will then start cruising by another scenic route to the overnight anchorage spot. [Day 6] Halong Bay – Hanoi – Hue 7.00: An early breakfast with tea and coffee will be available before a short walking tour to visit one of the most famous caves of Halong Bay. More gentle cruising before lunch on the boat. Check out and return to the pier around 11.00 am and board the minibus for the ride back to Hanoi. After free time for dinner, you'll be transferred to Noi Bai airport in plenty of time to board an evening flight to Danang, then private car to your hotel in Hue's historic centre by private car. [Day 7] Cycling Hue – Hoi An A classic cycling trail for people with average fitness - taxing, but not exhausting! You'll be driven to the coast, about 18km beyond Hue's city limits. The first 40km of our cycling is off the beaten track along a picturesque lane shaded by coconut palms running alongside the peninsula from Thuan An beach to Vinh Loc. We'll pause on the way to explore some of the hundreds of ancestral tombs scattered across the high sand dunes. Upon reaching the end of the peninsula you have two options – brave the traffic on Vietnam's busiest road or be transferred by car to the start of today's three hill climbs. Unless you enjoy following heavy juggernauts belching diesel fumes, we recommend the latter! After the first two moderate climbs, each about 3km, we take a break to relax, sunbathe, and splash in the azure waters of Lang Co beach. A tasty seafood lunch will refuel the tank before we head for the Hai Van Pass. You'll ignore the tunnel, full of commercial traffic and noxious gasses, in favour of the 11km mountain road. Since the tunnel was built, it's very quiet - the gradient is manageable and the views breathtaking! After a cool and cooling freewheel descent down the pass, you'll be transferred by car for the rest of the journey to Hoi An Ancient Town, a fantastically preserved historic old port and trading post where our journey ends. Overnight at your hotel in Hoi An [Day 8] Hoi An Free and Easy A full day free to spend at your leisure after the hard-biking day to enjoy the incomparable Hoi An. Dive into this mecca of clothes shopping or enjoy a beer by the river. Overnight in Hoi An. [Day 9] Hoi An – Da Lat Pick up from your hotel to drive to Danang airport for your flight to Da Lat. You'll be greeted at Da Lat airport and transferred to your hotel. Time will be free for your refreshment. [Day 10] Da Lat Biking This 33 kilometer ride is a moderate Dalat adventure. It's slightly more difficult than classic one. Save yourself on this one as it starts out flat but ends with some daunting hills. There are fantastic views throughout this ride and a great sampling of the terrain with lakes, pine forest, small country farms and a remote Chil minority village (Sieng). Lots of great single track and 3.5 + hours riding time. Overnight in Da Lat [Day 11] Biking from Mountains to the Coast Mui Ne You will get over 900 meters of descent on this 90+ km ride to Mui Ne as you wind through pine and jungle forested valleys into the tropical climate below. Our support vehicle takes you from Dalat to Di Linh (75 km) where we start the ride down to Mui Ne. The ride goes through small minority villages and jungle forested valleys to the beautiful beaches below. The first section of riding is through coffee plantations and forest and includes a 5 kilometer uphill climb to get you warmed up. This is followed by plenty of down hill and rolling sections. A final long downhill pass is completed before the road flattens out with a long cruise to Highway 1, where the ride ends and our vehicle transports us the rest of the way to Mui Ne (usually 30 minutes). The road is mostly paved (sealed) secondary and the support vehicle is used to transport all luggage and provisions for lunch and refreshment. The ride is also customizable in length, as the support vehicle can be used at any time by tired riders. Overnight in Mui Ne. [Day 12] Mui Ne Free and Easy A full day free to spend at your leisure after the hard-biking day to enjoy swimming at the white sand beach. Overnight in Mui Ne [Day 13] Mui Ne – Saigon After breakfast, we get on the car and head to Sai Gon – the biggest city of Vietnam. You will arrive Saigon around noon time, free time to relax until our driver comes to pick you up for our Sai Gon Special Treat tour at 6.00pm The hardworking city of Saigon by night is animated, glittering, and attractive. This is the time when locals seek shopping, entertainment and dining as they escape the daytime heat. The tour offers you an unforgettable experience as you mingle with the inhabitants for shopping at the night market and enjoy a river boat excursion to see Saigon from the water while a traditional music show is performed on board. Overnight in Saigon [Day 14] Saigon – My Tho – Ben Tre – Can Tho Shake hands with your guide with pick up at your hotel and transfer by car for a 1hour drive to Long An province. Start biking on single-track trails through rice fields, vegetable farms, and sugar cane plantations. Stop at a local farm house to enjoy tropical fruits in the countryside. Then continue biking through orchards and palm tree-covered lanes. Transfer to the pier and take a boat to Ben Tre province, where rowboats will bring you into the maze of canals and small branches of the Mekong. Get off the boat to pause for honeyed tea at Quoi An's bee farm and to check out workshops where a range of coconut products are skilfully handcrafted. We then cycle through a different series of back roads in the afternoon before the car transfer to Can Tho where you spend the night in a comfy hotel. [Day 15] Can Tho – Sai Gon Have breakfast and check out of the hotel for an early boat cruise the biggest floating market in the delta. Our boat will make its way slowly through the colourful commercial mayhem for fantastic photo opportunities amidst the huge variety of agricultural bounty on sale here. Farmers boats big and small trade seasonal fruits and an array of other goods in a chorus of sights and smells. Disembark for a short bike ride into villages around Phong Dien where we'll visit the ancient house in Binh Thuy village and enjoy delicious lunch before the drive back to Saigon. [Day 16] Departure As with the arrival day, the program for today depends on your flight departure time. Your guide can advise you on any last minute Saigon sights or shopping before our car picks you up at your hotel for the transfer to the airport. Note: The itinerary might have slightly change depending on your accommodation choices. Hue’s airport will be closed for upgrade until October 2013. Until then you have two main options to reach Hue from Hanoi: 1) Take a flight to Danang and then an overland transfer to Hue (from your hotel in Hanoi to your hotel in Hue, it is an approximately 6-hour journey by day) or 2) Take the night train to Hue (from your hotel in Hanoi to your hotel in Hue, it is an approximately 15-hour journey by night).
